Drawn from Memory is an experimental animation about a childhood memory of mine: When I was 9, my father took me to see a public execution. The death sentence is a common legal penalty in Iran and sometimes executions are open for the public to attend. This film is an effort to re-create and re-capture that brutal memory. It is also an autobiographical attempt to represent an author’s identity by showing the memories that shaped him. In other words: “As far as I can recall…”
it also worth mentioning Kurt Vonnegut and his novel Slaughter House 5 as a huge source of influence to me. In Slaughter House 5, Vonnegut tells a story about war and disaster in the most unusual and personal way. How he uses humor to explain dreadful events was a guideline for me to narrate Drawn from Memory.
