My Friend Domee is my second feature-length documentary. It is about an Illustrator /painter /writer /bookbinder/ teacher and poet, Dominika Wroblewska.
Through years of recording sound and image, the film tends to not only capture the life of this individual but also reflect the times that she lives in. My Friend Domee was more than anything, a practice of observation in the purest form. For most parts of the film, the element of Direct Cinema was employed. I believe that filmmakers should not intervene in the filmmaking process and keep contact with the subject to a minimum. The filmmaker should not manipulate the documentary mise-en scene for the purpose of the film. For most parts of the film directives to the subject on or off camera were avoided.
In many ways, My Friend Domee was a practice in Dogme 95. We started filming in 2018 and until late 2019 and 2020. We tried to capture every activity that defined this person, this artist.
