Leanne in the Lake was my response regarding the problem of ‘truth’. In this short experimental documentary, my friend Leanne is floating in a lake while we hear another woman talking about her mental state. the narration belongs to an interview with a schizophrenic patient more than 60 years ago. By syncing the audio of that patient and my friend, I tried to create a connection between the two, since they were both suffering from the same disorder and had strange similarities in their movements and even their voices.
When it comes to making a documentary it seems like the audience expects the filmmaker to show them the absolute truth. But truth can be personal and selective. Even if I use a surveillance camera to capture the everyday activity of people in its rawest form, the fact that I need to compress hours and hours of footage to 90 minutes suggests that I deliberately chose to include some parts and avoid others.
So ironically it seems like this ‘dream of authorship’ that I’m chasing is always there. All films are crafted and edited by an author. Even in the most basic kind of documentaries, such as Home Movies, where the whole idea is to capture private and insignificant events of one’s life.
